Twenty Friends enjoyed a two-hour guided walk around the east side of Pittville Park on 27 September. The borough council’s Senior Tree Officer, Chris Chavasse, pointed out the most significant trees, explained the challenges that trees face from extreme weather and pests, and expounded on the aesthetic and medicinal value of particular trees. He is preparing an updated tree walk for the area above the lake, which will be on our website in due course. Cheltenham Borough Council and Friends of Pittville have commissioned Illman Young Landscape Design to undertake a study of two key areas in the park: (a) the area in front of the Pump Room and (b) the Upper Lake. The study identifies current issues and proposes a range of works which could be carried out. Some of these could be carried out by our Green Space Volunteers, while others will require substantial fundraising.
Around 90 people looked at the plans when we set up a stall in the park on Sunday 2 September. The verbal comments were almost all in favour, though one visitor was worried that too many trees might be felled and that wildlife might suffer. A number of suggestions were made and these will be forwarded to the borough council.

Our supporters at the East India Cafe are opening a new venture on the Promenade in October – the Memsahib Gin and Tea Bar, celebrating the rich connections between Cheltenham and the British Raj.
We have been the East India Cafe’s chosen local charity for the last four years, and we will receive a percentage of the pledges made through their Kickstarter campaign, which you can see here.
We are delighted to be associated with this latest venture and will keep you posted with details of the opening.
We held another successful plant sale on 5 May 2018 in perfect weather, which raised £480 for improvements to the park. Thanks to everyone who helped on the day and/or provided plants.
