Pittville Circus tree walk

On a pleasant autumn evening in early October, Chris Chavasse, Senior Trees Officer for CBC, kindly led a delightful and informative walk on and around Pittville Circus, discussing the trees and plantings there. Most of us just whizz past this space, but it is well worth taking the time to walk around and really look at the trees on the roundabout – there is so much to see: an ancient yew that pre-dates the surrounding buildings, a mulberry tree and much more, including patches of wild orchids if you know when to look (and the mowing team haven’t chopped them off in their prime!).  And of course there were the various diseases, pests and fungi to learn about too.

Andrew and Susan Jordan of Apsley Lodge, Pittville Circus, very kindly invited everyone to meet at their house for a cuppa prior to the walk, where we were able to see an interesting display of historic maps and photographs of the local area. The event also provided a chance for interested parties to discuss the maintenance of the Circus, the grass areas, bulbs and wild plants.

We are planning to hold more tree walks in Pittville’s green spaces in spring and summer next year, with an aim of encouraging community involvement from those living nearby, as well as providing a pleasant and informative experience.
